Typeforce X
The annual exhibit to showcase typographic artists and designers celebrates ten years.
After collaborating with artist Mike McQuade for our Typeforce 5 installation in 2014, we were invited back to participate in the exhibit’s tenth year. Given the milestone anniversary, we opted to go big and take over the sole side gallery ‘room’. The result was “Artist Statement,” an exploration of some of art history’s most famous visuals, conveyed solely through typography. Rather than colorful, expressive and distinct artworks we’ve all come to know, each piece was conveyed through simple and elegant type forms, distilled to what we interpreted as the core expression of each piece. The result was an immersive installation meant to evoke new perspectives through minimalism and scale.
↗ ART INSTALLATION ↗ SIGNAGE
To play up the scale of the gallery space, we painted the room black, then installed floor to ceiling vinyl graphics. The artwork descriptions adorned the walls in minimalist black and white type forms, with an accompanying ‘key’ with the corresponding artists’ names on the pole in the center of the room.
